When you pass second place, you take their position - you become second, not first! This logic puzzle tricks many people who assume passing someone moves you to first. In track and field, lane assignments are based on previous heat times. The fastest qualifier typically gets lane 4 or 5 in the finals. Sprint races require explosive starts - Olympic sprinters reach top speed within 60 meters. Marathon runners must pace themselves carefully - running too fast early leads to "hitting the wall" later!
